Climate change is predominately caused by a build up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
So join us in taking the Help the Planet “Seven Step Challenge” and see how easy it is to reduce your carbon emissions.
Remember the three guiding principles in fighting climate change are:
- Reduce your carbon emissions
- Source green energy and products
- Offset the remainder of your carbon emissions
Fortunately there are a number of simple ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Some will cost you nothing, others will cost you a little bit. But all of them will save you money by reducing your energy bill and will help in the fight against climate change. Here are seven of our favourites:
- Plant trees
A single tree will absorb on average one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. - Switch to low energy light globes
On average a low energy globe uses 80% less energy to produce the same amount of light a standard globe. Each globe you replace will save up to 65kgs of carbon dioxide per annum. - Reduce the miles you drive
You'll save about 3 kgs of carbon for every 10 kms you don't drive. Or think of this another way – each litre of petrol you don't use will save about 2.5kgs of carbon and save you over $1.00! - Use less hot water
Install a low flow showerhead and wash you clothes in cold or warm water and you can save up to 400kgs of carbon per annum. - Turn off electronic appliances at the powerpoint
This can reduce your energy consumption in the home by up to 10% and save hundreds of kgs of carbon each year. - Reduce your heating in winter and cooling in summer
Turn the thermostat down two degrees in winter and up two degrees in summer and you will be saving hundreds of kgs of carbon each year – and you'll be reducing your energy bills as well! - Recycle more
Recycle just half of your household waste and you can save up to one ton of carbon per year
These seven steps are just a starting point – there's a lot more you can do to reduce your carbon footprint and save money at the same time. To find out more visit some of these other websites.
The changes you make wont cost the earth. But doing nothing might.
